Standout of the “Pearl of the Côte”

Vosne-Romanée is ground zero for Pinot Noir collectors worldwide. Home to the world’s most expensive red Burgundies, from vineyards like La Tâche, Richebourg, and Romanée-Conti, the region’s prestige is unrivaled—which is why it’s so exciting to present Jean Grivot’s standout 2019.

A wine of this quality with just a two-digit price tag is a rare thing in a town known for bottles that run into the four- and even five-figure range. Decanter said that it’s “just what you would want from a Vosne-Romanée,” an AOC known for producing Burgundies with exotic aromas and regal structure. No surprise that it comes from the Grivot family—uncompromising masters of this village that Allen Meadows, the Burghound, called “the Pearl of the Côte.”

This wine succeeds at capturing Vosne elegance in a top vintage. From the moment we pulled the cork, we were taken aback by its power and beauty. The rich, black-fruited nose, the seamless texture with its crushed mineral element, and the long, expansive finish…we were lost in our glasses for minutes, without realizing that everyone else in the room had gone silent as well.

Above all, the Grivots strive to make terroir-driven wines of finesse and supple, fleshy fruit. Careful work in the organically farmed vineyard yields robust, optimally ripened grapes with excellent concentration and flavor. That’s followed by a complete de-stemming to promote elegance, a naturally occurring fermentation, and then they keep the focus on the terroir by aging in just 20–25% new oak. In 2019, those choices—and picking at the perfect time during an outstanding, classic vintage—resulted in a wine of finesse that sings with ripe red fruit and floral notes while maintaining striking depth and delectable freshness.
