Oakville Grand Cru, Pure and Simple

Winemaker, vineyard, vintage, score: Those are the four pillars of prime Napa Valley Cabernet—and when they’re all rock-solid, we’re usually looking at an astronomical price.

That’s why the 2019 Gallica Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the greatest buys in collectible Cabernet.

The personal Cabernet of Rosemary Cakebread—the winemaker who built Spottswoode’s stellar reputation—this bottle hails from the iconic Oakville Ranch Vineyard and the astonishing 2019 vintage. That pedigree translates to an outstanding wine with BIG-TIME accolades to back it up.

Oakville Ranch is situated high above Peter Michael’s Au Paradis and Phelps’ Backus vineyard. It’s the go-to site for luminaries like Andy Erickson (Favia) and Helen Keplinger, thanks to its high altitude, coveted andesite soils, and expert organic farming by Phil Coturri. It’s truly one of the best sites in Oakville—a place with some stiff competition.

The Cabernet was picked on October 4th, the Cabernet Franc (just 3% of the blend) on the 15th. Both varieties were farmed organically, and the wine aged in oak barrels until bottling in June of 2021. Now, six years after harvest, it’s drinking beautifully, with miles to go in the cellar.

A tiny-production Cab from one of Napa Valley’s most accomplished crafters of Cabernet Sauvignon, this is an Oakville Grand Cru, pure and simple. It compares with wines that cost several times as much, and it will bring tremendous value to your collection over the next decade. If you’ve ever gotten goosebumps from a graceful bottle of Spottswoode Cabernet or a great vintage of Dalla Valle’s Maya, the 2019 Gallica Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon is for you.
