A Beautifully Sculpted Take on an Austrian Classic

The 2019 Gebruder Nitthaus Gruner Veltliner Reserve is one of the most stunning white-wine revelations we’ve had in recent memory.

More intense and structured than most Gruners, boasting stunning concentration and a 94-point score from Wine Enthusiast, this beautifully sculpted bottle is a sure bet for those who love bright white wines with substance and tension.

Grown on the sandy, gravelly plains around Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland, an eastern Austrian state that shares a border with Hungary, this gorgeous bottle is redolent of heady tropical fruits and fresh-zested lime. It’s got a shimmering platinum core, firm mineral flavors, and a telltale spice that lifts the wine’s finish without dominating the profile. Having spent eight months in stainless steel tanks, it’s got copious layers of lively fruit, linear acidity and crunchy minerality—a killer combination that few wines accomplish.

Drawing from a family winemaking tradition that stretches back over 300 years, Gebrüder Nittnaus is run today by brothers Andreas and Hans Michael Nittnaus, who work together with their parents, Hans and Christine. The winery focuses on sustainability, meticulously farming their estate vineyards to fully capture the terroir of Burgenland.

Delectable on its own, perfectly suited for flaky sea bass or a capery Sicilian skillet chicken, this is a special bottle—and one no white-wine lover should be without.
