The Rarest of the Rare
There are wines that arrive with a story attached, and then there are wines whose story is inseparable from what’s in the glass. The 2019 Gilbert Hall Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is the latter—a single barrel of Napa Cabernet made by one of the Valley’s most gifted winemakers, from one of its finest recent vintages, held with patience and intention until it was ready to be exactly what it could be.
One barrel. That is the entire production of this wine. It has never been offered anywhere before, and it will never be offered anywhere else.
The winemaker behind Gilbert Hall is Victoria Coleman, who made history as Napa Valley’s first Black female head winemaker. Her path to that distinction is anything but ordinary: she began her career as a production assistant at Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, learning from the legendary Warren Winiarski—the man whose wine upended the wine world at the 1976 Paris Tasting. She went on to study enology and viticulture at UC Davis, and deepened her craft further with a formative season at Château Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux. The result is a winemaker whose instincts are rooted equally in California’s boldness and the Old World’s precision.
The 2019 vintage gave her exceptional raw material to work with. It was a long, warm, even-keeled growing season in Napa—the kind that allows fruit to ripen slowly and fully, building the depth and structure that defines great Cabernet. The wine reflects it: a perfumed, layered Cabernet that opens with blackberry, plum, and cassis, underscored by sage, warm spice, and a subtle thread of espresso from beautifully integrated oak. The palate is polished and silky, the tannins fine and velvety, with a thread of freshness that keeps everything focused and alive. The finish is long and spiced, with lingering aromatic lift and complexity.
The name Gilbert Hall is a tribute to the iconic dormitory from A Different World, the beloved television series that captured a generation’s sense of identity, creativity, and possibility. The founders of this project—a group of some of the wine industry’s most respected voices, including DLynn Proctor, Jonah and Sara Beer of Pilcrow Wine, Artie L Johnson II, Devin Joshua, and Victoria, herself—chose that name deliberately.
A portion of the proceeds from every bottle supports Wine Unify, the nonprofit co-founded by DLynn Proctor, Martin Reyes MW, and Mary Margaret McCamic MW, dedicated to creating scholarships, mentorship, and opportunity for underrepresented communities in wine.
