Lange’s Liberty Bell Delivers Again
When it comes to delivering Pinot Noir knockouts, Lange is the gold standard. Wine Access members have made their Liberty Bell Pinot a perennial favorite, which is why we nabbed an early allocation of this brand-new 2019—at an incredible price. Drawn from Freedom Hill, the Oregon Grand Cru site that produces many $60+ bottles (not to mention Lange’s $70 vineyard-designate)‚ this rich, full-bodied 2019 is a superb Pinot from an estate Wine Enthusiast called “one of the great Pinot Noir producers in the United States.”
Wine Access members have flipped out for Lange's Liberty Bell bottling before—the 2014 and 2017 remain two of the most raved-about Oregon Pinots we've ever offered—and we’ve got the brand-new 2019 for a couple bucks LESS than the last few vintages.
Lange’s Pinot easily competes with the Archery Summits and Domaine Serenes of the world, at a price far below those of its peers. This richer-styled Pinot combines a Sea Smoke-esque power with the brightness and aromatics you'd expect out of top Burgundy. With a deep ruby core and aromas led by plum and blueberry compote accented by red roses, baking spice, and espresso, it’s a layered and complete bottle that shows exactly why Liberty Bell is so beloved by Wine Access members.
All that complexity and poise comes from Freedom Hill, a top-tier vineyard that’s attracted the Willamette Valley's finest winemakers, including Ken Wright, the late Patricia Green, and Ken Pahlow of Walter Scott. This Pinot is drawn from southeast-facing plots between 500 and 600 feet of elevation—high enough to have shallow soils that stress the vines, but low enough to enjoy prime sun exposure throughout the day.
Lange makes a Freedom Hill vineyard-designate Pinot that bears a $70 price tag, and winemaker Jesse Lange started making the Liberty Bell, from younger vines off the same vineyard, nearly a decade ago. Since then, the vines have matured, and the Liberty Bell bottling has gotten more and more formidable. It still shows its stuff earlier than Lange’s Freedom Hill-labeled bottle, but over the years, this Pinot has picked up even more of the complexity and nuance that typify the more expensive wines from this site.
That value is a big reason Liberty Bell is one of the best received Oregon Pinots we've ever offered. The quality-to-price ratio is off the charts even at its SRP, which makes it a super-steal at our price.
