    Seduced by Silex

An aromatic masterpiece and crystalline expression of its famed region’s flinty soils, Michel Girard’s Cuvée Silex is hands down one of the best Sancerres of the 2019 vintage.

A bottle like this is a remarkable feat at this price, especially as prices continue to skyrocket thanks to Sancerre’s soaring popularity. That’s why, within moments of tasting it, we cornered the US market on Cuvée Silex.

Named for the region’s lustrous metallic soils, the wine’s golden core radiates hints of shimmering platinum, before precise aromas of Sorrento lemon zest, fresh chamomile, and spice waft to the fore. Racy citrus and concentrated stone fruit drive the palate, but it’s the thread of crushed limestone that defines this 100% Sauvignon Blanc.

It’s a wine that begs for multiple sips—even before the waves of minerality are done coursing through the long, zippy finish.

Michel Girard et Fils is situated in Verdigny, one of the most famous villages in the Sancerre appellation. Though today it’s named for owner Michel and his sons, Benoît and Philippe, the domaine’s 50-acre estate has been producing classically styled wines since the French Revolution.

Philippe always had a special proclivity for the Sauvignon Blanc grapes grown on his family’s flinty soils. The hard, metal-like silex is made from silicon dioxide, and it literally glimmers in the dirt, storing and reflecting heat well in a region that might otherwise be too cold to ripen grapes. This soil imbues the wines with their unmistakable Sancerre minerality.

Philippe bucked family tradition by withholding all the Sauvignon Blanc from the silex-dominant section of the vineyard for a separate, secret, experimental bottling—without approval of son père. Fortunately for Philippe (and white wine lovers), the finished wine’s focused purity and kinetic energy proved such a thrilling interpretation that his insubordination was forgiven soon after it was discovered. Cuvée Silex has been a staple of the Girard lineup every year since.
