Some of the Most Precious Real Estate in Piedmont
The Barolo village of Verduno is one of the world’s finest hamlets for growing Nebbiolo—and Monvigliero is its most blessed cru. This world-class site—which Wine Advocate hails as “the most sought-after MGA in the appellation”—is the gold standard for what a Barolo vineyard can be.
Poderi Einaudi’s epic 2019 is just the second-ever Monvigliero bottling from the iconic estate, and it earned 96 points from both Wine Advocate and former Wine Enthusiast Italian-wine expert Kerin O’Keefe. It’s an impeccably sourced Barolo that expresses this special site with aristocratic power and beautiful aromatic sophistication.
Grown on vines planted as far back as the 1960s—quite old for Barolo—Einaudi’s Monvigliero comes from a tiny, 1.5-hectare plot in the famed cru. The grapes were hand-harvested before a 20-25 day maceration on the skins during fermentation in concrete tanks, extracting the beautiful dark-cherry, citrus peel, and rose petal aromas that the best bottles from Monvigliero are known for. That was followed up by a very old-school stay in large oak barrels, then even more bottle-aging.
The 2019 vintage presents a golden opportunity for lovers of classical Barolo. Vinous called the year “stellar,” praising the “potent, tightly wound wines that will thrill readers who appreciate the nuance, subtlety and structure of Nebbiolo.” At bottling, the Einaudi team gave this wine a special artist-label to celebrate the estate’s 125th anniversary. It will be a thrill to watch this incredible Barolo blossom over the next two decades.
