“The Friend that Fits in at Every Party”
Prosper Maufoux’s 2019 Bourgogne is proof that excellent Burgundies don’t just come from the Grands and Premiers Crus. Crafted by the legendary Nadine Gublin, the first woman to win the coveted Winemaker of the Year title from La Revue du Vin de France, it’s a beautifully aromatic bottle that shows why generations have fallen for Pinot Noir from the grape’s homeland.
Great Burgundy seduces you with elegance and pretty fruit, and this excels in both areas. In fact, Will Patton, the Beverage Director at Michelin-starred Bresca in Washington, D.C., couldn’t contain his excitement when we started talking about the wine. “The aromas!” he exclaimed. “There’s a panoply of cherries, raspberries, and vanilla, and they just jump out of the glass in such an alluring fashion.”
This is a wine that goes with an endless variety of foods. Bresca likes to serve it with their duck à la presse. We love it with grilled salmon, but as Will notes, “It’s the friend that fits in at every party, a perfect pairing at most any dinner.”
The eponymous Prosper Maufoux winery dates back to 1860, when the founder left his trade as a notary to set up a small winery in Santenay, one of the best villages for value in the Côte d’Or. Over the intervening generations, the domaine has built up enviable vineyard holdings, allowing them to deliver quality like few others—and this is a perfect entry into their lineup.
