Wine Advocate: "A Powerful Beauty"

We send out offers each year for well over a thousand wines, but when it comes to stratospheric quality for the price, none of them may be a greater deal than the 2019 Quinta do Noval Vintage Port.

This bottle’s rare critical consensus confirms it as a classic: It earned 97 points from FOUR major publications and critics: Wine Advocate, who praised it as a “powerful beauty,” Decanter, James Suckling, and Jeb Dunnuck, who actually gave it 97+.

Promising years of evolution and enjoyment, this one will age for decades and decades. Decanter sees the drinking window going out to 2080, which makes this bottle perfect for commemorating birth years and wedding anniversaries.

At age 307, Quinta do Noval is not only one of the oldest port houses, it is arguably the greatest. Unlike most in the region, all of Noval’s wines are made entirely from estate-grown grapes, farmed from vineyards near the sleepy town of Pinhão since 1715.

But throughout their history, Noval has never made wines like they do today—the result of a 30-year quality resurgence that hasn’t escaped the notice of the wine press, with Decanter recently cooing, “Quinta do Noval is a jewel.”

Noval stood out in the outstanding 2019 growing season. The year was moderate, with a beautifully dry fall that allowed their grapes to develop the house’s signature power and concentration—all while maintaining an energy and vibrancy that’s a hallmark of the vintage.

Quinta do Noval still makes wine the old-fashioned way, foot-treading the grapes to gently extract the juice without drawing excess tannins from the seeds, and carefully managing barrel aging. The result, as this incredible 2019 shows, is timeless.
