A Stunning Vintage Meets Tuscan Royalty

First, he turned Napa Valley into a world-class wine region. Then he partnered with Baron Philippe de Rothschild to create Opus One.

After that, Robert Mondavi turned his attention toward his family’s native Italy, partnering with the legendary Frescobaldi family to create Tenuta Luce, which has become Italy’s Opus One, producing wines that are among the richest and most monumental in the country.

Luce’s most prestigious wine is their Brunello—a towering bottling coveted by collectors worldwide. And in a landmark 2019 vintage, Luce’s standout bottling earned a 98-point score from Tuscan-expert James Suckling.

The Luce estate is located in the hills of Montalcino. Up until 2015, only Super Tuscans were produced from their site, but the quality of the Sangiovese was impossible to ignore. Luce’s Brunello became an instant icon on release, and the 2019 stands out among the best of Tuscany.

That’s partly because the 2019 vintage is emerging as an all-time great in Montalcino: Vinous called it “the vintage we’ve all been waiting for.” Kerin O’Keefe, who wrote THE book on Brunello, said “I’ve never tasted so many drop-dead-gorgeous young Brunellos from a single vintage.” Our own Master Somm, not one for overstatement, called it “tremendous.”

A bone-chilling winter ensured the vines stayed dormant well into spring, setting the stage for a frost-free budbreak and flawless weather during flowering. Summer kicked the Tuscan countryside into action, with the plants rapidly sending green tendrils toward the sky in the warm air, which saw near-perfect quantities of rain. Once harvest arrived, Tenuta Luce was able to pick during the final week of September, ensuring the beautifully textured dark fruit and suave tannins that only long hang-times are able to bring.
