Swiss Precision, Napa Valley Sunshine

Tracking down screaming deals on Napa Valley Cabernet is one of our specialties, but more often than not, great under-$50 Napa Cabs come with a degree of secrecy.

Not the 2019 Theorize Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley. This stunner has a pedigree—not to mention a score—that we can shout from the rooftops.

Crafted by 100-point winemaker Jean Hoefliger—the man behind perfect wines from Alpha Omega and The Debate—the 2019 Theorize displays that impeccable Napa Valley vintage in a wine that not only earned 94 points from Decanter, but claimed a spot on their list of top buys in value 2019 Napa Cabernet.

Hoefliger is the globe-hopping talent trusted by renowned enologist Michel Rolland to make his namesake MR Napa Valley Cabernet. After getting a viticultural degree in Switzerland, Hoefliger did formative stints in Bordeaux at Château Carbonnieux and Château Lynch-Bages.

He then turned his focus to the New World, where he has made two perfect wines under The Debate label, several 98-pointers at Alpha Omega, and a slew of impressive wines for Newton. And for what some of the big-name Napa Cabernets charge for one bottle of their 94-pointers, you can put away four or more bottles of this beauty.

Theorize began with the laudable goal of producing a Napa Valley brand with a great quality-to-price-ratio—something we’ve heard a million times from well-intended wineries who end up running head-on into the realities of sourcing grapes and top talent in the region. But Theorize drives a bus through those barriers, and in turn confidently walks the walk, proving that serious, affordable Cabernets do exist in Napa Valley—when you know where to find them.
