A Best Buy Five Centuries in the Making
Stadt Krems’ Grüner Veltliner has been one of our members’ favorite whites since we first offered it in 2016. A crisp, zesty white, it’s beloved for its outrageous quality for the price—and the 2019 version looks to be the best yet, with a 92-point score and Best Buy designation from Wine Enthusiast.
2019 is a vintage that’s already being hailed as the best since the epic 1999 season—and based on the quality of wines like this Grüner, we’re convinced we can’t buy enough. Stadt Krems won the coveted Winery of the Year award from Falstaff—Austria’s most prestigious wine publication—on the strength of their ‘19s, which are notable even in a great vintage.
There’s an electricity to this bottling that separates it from the last few (excellent) editions. That didn’t go unnoticed by Wine Enthusiast, who praised the wine for its “slender but concentrated palate,” and “salty, peppery highlights,” while naming it a rare Best Buy. This Grüner is super-classic and crisp, with a silver tone and aromas of watercress, kiwi, lemon, lime, and the energy we normally associate with $30+ bottles.
Weingut Stadt Krems is Exhibit A in how Grüner Veltliner has gone from a little-known Austrian grape to one of the hottest varieties in wine. If you know it, you know how incredible this price is. If you’re a white wine fan who doesn’t know Grüner yet, this deal is the perfect introduction.
The incredible value of Stadt Krems is simple: They’ve owned their land for centuries, which allows them to put out world-class wines at the kind of shockingly affordable prices that keep us reaching for the wine without hesitation.
The Kremstal region shares the same rocky terraced vineyards that produce the rich, generous Grüner Veltliners of the world-famous Wachau region. In fact, the area of Stein, where a large portion of the grapes in the 2019 Stadt Krems was grown, used to be a part of the Wachau.
The Austrians seem to gulp this by the gallon with schnitzel, but we love it anytime: at cocktail hour, or with oysters on the half shell, fresh cheeses, or even pickled vegetables. No matter what we drink it with, though, we can’t get enough—keep a second bottle in the fridge.
