A Russian River Valley Anomaly
Venture into the Russian River Valley’s fog-shrouded hillsides and vineyards caressed by Pacific breezes, and you’ll find some of California’s most impeccable Pinot Noir. It yields bottles so rich, so vibrant, that most wineries wouldn’t dare sell them for less than $30.
Angeline isn’t most wineries.
Their 92-point 2020 Pinot Noir is a juicy and energetic bottle that is without a doubt one of the most enticing values of the year.
Leave it to Courtney Benham, owner of the storied Martin Ray Vineyards & Winery, to deliver so much pedigree for the price. This Angeline Pinot is his Russian River venture, and he’s leveraged longstanding relationships there to harness excellent sites.
Pour yourself a glass and get lost in the wine’s rich aromatics and lively red fruit: The nose shows notes of cherry, plum, mint, wild violet, and pepper. The Pinot is ripe and round on the palate, balanced by brightness and vibrant acidity, with black tea and anise that persist over a nice, long finish.
The outstanding value of this Pinot is no surprise, considering the super-talented winemaking duo of Talley alum Leslie Renaud and consultant Keith Emerson, who achieved 100-point fame at Vineyard 29. In 2020, they harvested slightly earlier than years past, giving this wine lively zip and energy. After hand-picking and destemming, they added polish, balance, and warm spice notes by giving the wine 12 months in 40% new French oak.
From the land where Pinot prices soar, Courtney Benham has once again hit a home run.
