One of Washington’s Best Winemakers

Chris Peterson is one of the most critically acclaimed and respected winemakers in all of Washington—and the Sestina Cabernet Sauvignon is one of his signature bottlings.

Chris made his name making profound Cabernet as the winemaker for DeLille—a legendary winery that a famous critic once called “the Lafite-Rothschild of Washington State”—before striking out in 2010 to make his own wines under the Avennia label. Since then, he’s earned a flotilla of high scores, not to mention a Winemaker of the Year award from Seattle Magazine—an enormous honor within the Pacific Northwest wine community.

His 2020 Sestina is a classic Columbia Valley Cabernet blend that earned 95-point praise from Decanter, who called it “gorgeous” and “revelatory.” The product of a hot, dry vintage, it’s bold and rich—sourced from some of Washington’s best vineyards.

You’ll find names like Dionysus, Red Willow, and Bacchus adorning single-vineyard bottles from some of the best producers in Washington, and fruit from those sites makes its way into Sestina. All boast a perfect environment to produce thick-skinned, color-rich berries. The high-desert climate, where the sun beats down during the day but temperatures drop quickly at night, allows the grapes to hold onto their vibrant freshness—which means Peterson can allow them to hang late into the season, perfect for creating powerful, lush wines.

Peterson was inspired by the Grand Cru Classé wines of Bordeaux’s Left Bank for this bottle, which adds a splash of Merlot and dash of Cabernet Franc to round out the blackberry and huckleberry flavors with a touch of dried cherry and dried herbs. It’s a real stunner.
