Tenuta Nuova “Stands Apart”

Casanova di Neri defines Brunello di Montalcino.

That’s how our wine team—and many collectors—feel about the iconic producer, who has notched Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year, logged multiple Top 100 bottles, and amassed a shelf full of Tre Bicchieri honors.

Today’s 2020 Casanova di Neri Tenuta Nuova is a Brunello collectible that hits the trifecta: iconic producer, outstanding vintage, and monster critical acclaim: 97-point scores from both James Suckling and Jeb Dunnuck, plus a glowing 96 from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.

“This is the wine that best represents the Casanova di Neri house style,” wrote Wine Advocate just last year about Tenuta Nuova. They call the 2020 “open-knit and generous with velvety tannins and no bitterness on the finish.” It’s “texturally rich,” with “the bulk and the fresh fruit concentration for long cellar aging.”

Founded in 1971 by Giovanni Neri, the family-owned Casanova di Neri estate has consistently pushed the boundaries of quality and innovation, earning a reputation as one of Italy's most prestigious wineries. With a deep respect for tradition and an eye for modern techniques, the estate has become synonymous with exceptional Brunello di Montalcino.

Vinous praised Casanova di Neri's “intricate understanding of terroir and how to blend it to perfection,” and the winery’s vineyards span diverse microclimates and soil compositions across Montalcino. Their dedication to land stewardship is evident in their meticulous vineyard management practices, which prioritize sustainability and minimal intervention.

For this bottle, the grapes were harvested in mid-September to October, sorted by hand, then destemmed and sorted again, optically. It underwent native-yeast fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless tanks, with frequent pressing, before resting 30 months in oak barrels. After another 18 months in bottle, the wine was released—and it is a stunner.
