One Shot per Year at a Rhône Legend

Wine Spectator dubbed Louis Barruol “the Genius of Gigondas.”

We think that’s a bit understated.

Critic Jeb Dunnuck, who built his reputation as a Rhône authority, called Barruol’s Château de Saint Cosme “unquestionably one of the reference point estates…in the entire southern Rhône Valley.” Barruol’s talents translate flawlessly to Châteauneuf-du-Pape—and his 2020 Saint Cosme Châteauneuf-du-Pape is as good as you can get for the money.

This bottle hails from an outstanding vintage and three of the appellation’s best climats, including the legendary galet-strewn La Crau that Vieux Télégraphe made famous. Warm and rich, with complex intertwining flavors and a rich, spicy finish that goes on and on, it stands with superstars like Vieux Télégraphe, Beaucastel, and Domaine de la Janasse.

Saint Cosme is synonymous with Gigondas, where the Barruol family has owned their property since 1490, but red-wine fans also know Louis as one of the greats of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. He sources from three of the appellation’s best climats—including the legendary, galet-strewn La Crau—producing a gorgeous wine that lives up to its blue-chip pedigree and stands with the best of the appellation.

Louis is a 14th-generation vigneron, and even today, a part of his cellar that was built by the Romans around the year 100 still exists. He knows the land of the Southern Rhône inside and out, and that bone-deep sense for terroir shows.

From La Crau, the most famous vineyard in the region, he nails the trademark Christmas-cake notes and houses them within the wine’s fine-boned tannic structure. To that base, he adds fruit from two vineyards: the sand- and pebble-strewn Valori, plus Cristia, where vines rooted in clay-sand soils enjoy the benefits of a northeasterly exposure. The wine ages for 24 months, resulting in beautiful balance and expression.
