100 Points, Not Pétrus Prices
Château Troplong Mondot sits at the highest point in the Saint-Émilion appellation, its vines cascading down a hillside and back up another in a full 360-degree sweep of exposure. The clay and limestone soils here are among the most prized on the Right Bank—cool enough to preserve freshness, mineral-rich enough to build structure, and ideally suited to the Merlot that dominates the estate's plantings.
The estate takes its name from Raymond Troplong, a 19th-century French jurist and senator who acquired the property in 1848 and expanded it into one of Saint-Émilion's most significant holdings. Today it is one of only a handful of estates to hold Premier Grand Cru Classé status—the appellation's highest designation—and its position on the plateau above the town of Saint-Émilion has long made it one of the Right Bank's most coveted addresses.
Estate director Aymeric de Gironde and consultant Thomas Duclos have spent years refining their approach to this exceptional terroir, and the 2020 vintage gave them every opportunity to show what it can do. The growing season was warm and dry, producing fruit of exceptional concentration across Bordeaux. On the Right Bank, clay soils helped retain just enough moisture to keep the vines in balance—and the estates that farmed with care were rewarded with some of the most compelling wines in a generation.
At Troplong Mondot, that care extended deep into the winery. Harvest took place only in the early morning hours to protect the fruit from the heat, with grapes chilled to around five degrees before fermentation. A cold maceration averaged ten days—some tanks pushed to fifteen—followed by a rapid, efficient fermentation. As in 2019, malolactic fermentation was completed in tank rather than in barrel, a decision that, in de Gironde's words, "brings a bit more purity to the wines."
The result is a wine of remarkable precision and depth: dark fruit, rose petal, and licorice on the nose, a palate of satiny concentration, and a finish of extraordinary length. Decanter awarded it a perfect 100 points—one of just three Right Bank wines to receive that distinction in 2020—calling it "an absolute beauty."
