The Best Kind of Sticker Shock

Opus One. Beckstoffer To Kalon. Mondavi To Kalon. Those three vineyards occupy three of the corners at the intersection of Highway 29 and Oakville Crossroad—one of the most sacred spots in the world of Cabernet.

The fourth corner is home to the organically farmed Pelissa Vineyard, the source of the 2020 Chris Hamilton Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Wülf Oakville—one of the greatest Cab buys in Napa.

This stellar wine was made for Chris Hamilton by the Pelissa family, highly influential vignerons in Oakville and Yountville for five generations. The Pelissas and the Hoxseys, their extended family, are the team behind Ghost Block Estate Wines and the vineyard of the same name. Their winery, Napa Wine Company, is the last in California with a bonded winery number in the single digits (#9)—a testament to their longevity and deep roots in the world of wine.

Proprietor Chris Hamilton chose a wolf motif for his brand because he feels it’s his spirit animal, standing for loyalty, strength, and character—all values he holds dear. However, only this Cabernet bottling bears the name Wülf, which is a nod to his wife Heidi’s German heritage. The red on the label is the same shade used by Ferrari—the preferred vehicle of Hamilton, a former amateur racer.

The Pelissa Vineyard has been farmed organically since being planted in 1998, and the 22-year-old vines are now really hitting their stride. A case of this wine is going to cruise through 10 years in a cool cellar with no problem, and will improve over the journey.
