2020 Devil's Corner Resolution Chardonnay Tasmania 750 ml

Winegrowing on Tasmania’s east coast requires tenacity. 

The Australian island is surrounded by frigid Antarctic currents, making it a chilly, wind-whipped state with over 1000 shipwrecks racked up by its wild weather. Fortunately, tenacity is something that winemaker Tom Wallace has in spades—and it takes just one sip of his 2020 Devil's Corner Resolution Chardonnay to prove that working this harsh land is well worth it. 

You’d have to scour Burgundy and the California coast for a long time to find a value that tops this one. A gorgeous Chardonnay, it offers a kaleidoscope of citrusy, stoney aromas, followed by a vibrant palate and whip-crack of acidity. 

Tom Wallace revels in “the dance with nature”—and in his corner of the world, dance he must. Tasmania isn’t the most hospitable place for wine grapes. Devil’s Corner is at roughly the same latitude south of the equator as Rome is north, but because the wind slows ripening, and cold weather makes the growing season resemble Burgundy, Chardonnays like Resolution maintain vibrant acidity. 

The wine is a blend of Tamar Valley (north coast) fruit and east coast fruit from Devil’s Corner’s Hazard Vineyard. Blending the two sites creates a more balanced, complex wine than either parcel would give on its own.

This gorgeous bottle of Chardonnay stacks up against a top Oregon or Sonoma Coast Chardonnay, or even a posh Puligny from someone like Sauzet. Crack one open whenever the mood strikes you, or when you’re looking for something to cut through tonight’s filet of sole like a light saber. Simply perfect!
