The Puligny Ace Up Our Sleeve

You can pore over maps, memorize production regulations, and study complex genealogies. But when it comes to knowing Burgundy, you also need to pick up a few little nuggets—a couple of aces up your sleeve—and that can only come with time.

Domaine de Montille’s Domaine Le Clos du Château Bourgogne Blanc, from the historic Chateau de Puligny-Montrachet, is one of our aces.

The label merely says “Bourgogne,” so you wouldn’t know that Le Clos du Château is a historic, single walled clos within the town of Puligny.  A modest five-hectare, limestone-rich vineyard, it’s biodynamically farmed, resulting in an insider’s wine that punches WAY above its price tag.

We love the white wines of Domaine de Montille. We can't ever seem to buy enough of them, and neither can MICHELIN-starred restaurants like Saison, Quince, The French Laundry, and Eleven Madison Park.

When Étienne de Montille took over management of Château de Puligny-Montrachet in 2001, he reduced yields significantly and introduced biodynamic farming, which sent quality through the roof. He loved the vineyards so much that in 2012, he and his investors bought the domain itself to incorporate into Domaine de Montille. Their whites “have been singing a clear and beautiful song for quite a while now,” wrote Burgundy expert Jasper Morris MW.

We can’t think of a more affordable way to experience the savory, flinty, citrusy magic of Puligny-Montrachet than this Bourgogne Blanc grown on this little island hidden in plain sight amid the bustle of the town. Just thinking about it makes us thirsty.
