Is Châteauneuf Blanc by Another Name…

White Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a singular obsession for many wine lovers. Bold and luscious with exotic fruit, big aromas, and a plush texture that precedes a mile-long finish, there’s nothing else like it.

But Domaine Gassier’s Lou Coucardié comes as close as we’ve tasted.

Anyone who loves reveling in the fascinating complexities that emerge from full bodied, robust, ageworthy whites owes it to themself to try this wine. A blend of Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache Blanc, and Clairette, it's reminiscent of Beaucastel Blanc, a powerful bottling that commands more than $90. No wonder Jeb Dunnuck gave the 2020 a 94-point score. He’s even called Lou Coucardié “a tour de force” in a straight-up rave review of a past vintage.

Tasted blind, this opulent bottle would fool the best palate into believing it’s a Châteauneuf-du-Pape because it’s composed of classic Châteauneuf grapes from a terroir that looks like it was lifted straight out of that pricey appellation.

The Lou Coucardié Blanc will have your friends thinking you spent wildly, despite its modest pricing, and a lot of that’s down to Michel Gassier. Tall and soft-spoken, with graying hair and the firm handshake of a working man, he explained to us in impeccable English (his wife is American) how he's made it his life’s mission to prove his soils can produce wines just as awe-inspiring as those from the Rhône’s better-known subzones.

Mission accomplished. We love his wines, and Jeb Dunnuck declared that “enough can’t be said about the quality coming from Michel Gassier’s own label…these wines consistently punch well above their price point and I buy my fair share every year.” Take a sip and you’ll see what all the buzz is about.
