One of the Best Under-$50 Burgundies You’ll See
“Meursault, right?”
That was the first thing we said after sampling the paper-bag-wrapped Domaine Hubert Bouzereau-Gruère Bourgogne. We were confident: There’s a lot of blind tasting expertise around our table.
But when it was revealed, the bottle in question wore a humble Bourgogne label…and had a price nowhere near that of Meursault! We had to text the importer, a bloodhound when it comes to finding Burgundy’s secret gems, to check the sourcing.
Within minutes, they confirmed that the grapes hail from the village of Meursault, the source of some of France’s richest, most voluptuous Chardonnays, where bottles run to hundreds of dollars.
The 2020 hails from one of Burgundy’s greatest white-wine vintages: Wine Advocate ranks the year “among the very best produced in the last two decades.” That makes this one of the most profound white Burgundies that you’ll see at this price. Mineral-driven yet draped with creamy, textural layers, there’s no wonder why it’s been a sommelier favorite, poured at MICHELIN-starred destinations like Restaurant Daniel in New York.
Wine Advocate has hailed the estate as “an excellent source of classic white Burgundy that doesn't follow fashion or seek publicity, and which works with an enviable portfolio of appellations and an equally enviably elevated average vine age.”
That age—which averages 45 years—becomes immediately apparent when you see the hand-tended, gnarled old Chardonnay bushes in Meursault. For bargain-hunting Burgundy lovers like ourselves, this bottle is truly a rare blessing, capturing the signature beeswax concentration of the region and the craft of a great Côte de Beaune family.
