Great Sancerre Never Goes out of Style

Just one sip and we could see that the mouthwatering 2020 Hubert Brochard Tradition is as classic and irresistible as Sancerre gets.

“If your palate were a racetrack, this would be Formula One, not NASCAR,” our Master Sommelier, Sur Lucero, said as he poured our tastes—and a little bit more for himself.

With crisp, clean, citrus aromatics plus a palate showing a lively, bristling energy, this is focused and precise with good cut throughout—beyond light on its feet. It’s a wine that begs for multiple sips even before the waves of minerality are done coursing through the long, chalky finish.

Situated on the eastern edges of the Loire Valley’s Sancerre AOC, Domaine Hubert Brochard—run by the fifth and sixth generations of the family—is one of only a small number of Sancerre producers who continue to harvest most of their grapes by hand. From their winery in the tiny hamlet of Chavignol, the family has always produced classically styled Sancerre that benefits from the range of Sauvignon Blanc across their diverse holdings.

With an average vine age of 30 years, the 2020 Tradition comes from six different communes in Sancerre, capturing the region’s most distinctive terroirs all in one bottle. Powerful, mineral, and buoyed by a keen-edged line of fresh acidity, the grapes’ character is preserved by vinification in stainless steel, resulting in a wine that zips across the palate.
