We Scooped the Entire U.S. Allocation
Supply chain hiccups, tariffs, low-yield vintages, unprecedented demand—these are the ingredients for the perfect storm of Burgundy scarcity that’s battering the contemporary wine market. Good deals from the region are harder than ever to come by—which is why the 2020 Domaine Perraud is such a must-have.
It’s the ultimate weeknight red Burgundy, which is why we grabbed all we could after we first encountered this featherweight, cherry-scented beauty on a wintry November evening at Margaux restaurant in New York City’s Marlton Hotel. Like many great discoveries, it began with a mere intimation, the Domaine Perraud name catching our eye on the by-the-glass list.
Following an aperitif of Blanc de Blancs Champagne and a plate of creamy burrata, it was decision time. And when we asked the server her opinion of the well-priced Bourgogne Rouge, well, she shot us a look that told us we’d be nuts to order anything else.
What arrived in our glass was the epitome of fresh, clean, easy-drinking red Burgundy that encourages no pretense and demands no patience. Showing a lively ruby-garnet core, it’s got buoyant aromas of rose petals, wild strawberry, pomegranate, and damp forest floor. It’s sleek and silky on the palate, driven by red fruit tones and a bounty of fresh herbs, leaving a wave of cleansing acidity in its wake.
Domaine Perraud is one of the premier estates of the Mâconnais in southern Burgundy. Known for Chardonnay, they also happen to make a supremely elegant Pinot Noir from the mineral-rich soils of the commune of La Roche Vineuse—one that hardly ever appears in the United States. One sip, and you’ll know why we scooped up the entire allocation.
