One of Italy’s Most Exciting White Wines
Over the last decade, there’s been no Italian region with more buzz than Colli Tortonesi—a tiny corner of Piedmont that’s gone from practically unknown to the source of some of the most coveted, complex white wines in Italy.
Producers like Vietti, Borgogno, Oddero, and La Spinetta have all charged in, but Ezio Poggio is one of the visionaries who paved the path for them—and he’s making the most exciting wines in the appellation today. Top somms across the country have noticed as well, putting his wines on MICHELIN-starred lists at restaurants like Quince and Del Posto.
He’s the only producer in Colli Tortonesi’s Terre di Libarna subzone—the most difficult part of the DOC to farm. Everyone else has realized that it’s much easier to grow vines on rolling hills, not steep slopes, and to work at lower elevations, where the thin-skinned grapes have an easier time. But Poggio is maniacally obsessed, and his flagship Archetipo botting is proof that all his hard work has paid off.
Every sip of the 2020 crackles with energy—it’s mouthwatering and persistent, complex and delicious. Timorasso has drawn comparisons to Chenin Blanc for its texture and ageability, but it also has a beautiful limestone-infused intensity.
Archetipo, the estate’s flagship, is made from high-elevation plantings and given extended time in stainless-steel tanks and in bottle. The wine never sees oak, so its texture and flavors are a pure expression of the singular terroir of the region.
We love this wine for its brilliant minerality and compelling energy. There’s nothing else that tastes quite like it—the mark of truly brilliant farming and winemaking. It’s bright, lively and the ideal partner for fresh seafood or salty cheese.
