The Story

Morellino di Scansano is “grape heaven,” according to Wine Spectator, and Fattoria Le Pupille is the region’s “reigning monarch.” Their 2020 Poggio Valente earned a stunning 95-point score from James Suckling, topping Isole e Olena’s iconic Cepparello ($148) and showing off the layered fruit and complexity that you’d expect from a wine at least twice the price. “The 2020 impresses with its superb balance and class,” wrote Antonio Galloni.

Lots of rose petals on the nose, together with orange peel and cherries. Medium-bodied with very long and bright fruit character. Goes on for minutes, with so much energy and brightness. Drink or hold.

Following a challenging harvest for Sangiovese, the Fattoria le Pupille 2020 Poggio Valente generates aromas of wild cherry, pressed violet, balsam herb and grilled rosemary. There is a lot of good freshness (this was the difficulty of the vintage), and the wine has good tannic support for a rich core of fruit. Poggio Valente is not dominated by oak, and that is also what sets it apart.

Pour a glass of this ruby-hued wine, and from the first aromas of red fruit, tobacco, and lavender seed, it’s clear you’re in for a transportive experience. It’s gorgeously layered, exemplifying Sangiovese’s elegance along with a touch of Maremma’s dynamic wild side. Gracefully balanced and structured, its tannins are well-woven into a kaleidoscope of flavors ranging from red fruit to flowers and spice.

Poggio Valente’s vineyard sits 280 meters above sea level and has an ideal southeast aspect—the better to catch the morning sun. Vines anchored in a mix of stones and sandstone soils complete the terroir, laying the groundwork for exceptional grapes that ultimately result in a truly distinguished wine.

The 2020 Fattoria Le Pupille Poggio Volante is the masterwork of winemaker Elisabetta Geppetti—the perfect person to showcase what Morellino can do. Her connection to the land is strong: She inherited the estate at age 20, and her iconic Saffredi bottling possesses the same status among collectors as Solaia, Ornellaia, and Sassicaia. Her 30 years of experience in the region have earned her the unofficial title of “Ambassador of Maremma,” and the epithet “Lady of Morellino.” In 1992, she became the first chairperson of the Consortium of Morellino di Scansano, further burnishing her reputation.

Her persistence has kept Le Pupille in the upper echelon, and she is now shepherding her daughter Clara Gentili through the business. In the cellar, the result of Geppetti’s efforts is the Poggio Valente, a wine of richness and grace. It’s tough to find in general—and all but impossible to find at a price this low. Italian-wine lovers, be vigilant.
