The Epitome of Elegance and Grace
Ridge. Ravenswood. Biale. Turley.
There are only a few California icons who we can verily say have mastered Zinfandel—and Frog’s Leap, without a doubt, is one of them. It’s the epitome of Zinfandel elegance and grace—a benchmark classic that Robert Parker called “impossible to resist,” and a must-have for anyone who loves Napa Valley red wines.
Frog’s Leap dates back to 1981, when John Williams—less than a decade removed from helping craft the historic 1973 Stag’s Leap Cabernet—founded the winery along with Larry Turley. It’s now a fixture in the pantheon of Napa’s iconic labels, revered for its adherence to organic viticulture and dry-farming, renowned for delivering an astounding level of quality and value.
The 2020 was crafted from 85% Zinfandel, 9% Petite Sirah, and 6% Carignan, with all of the Zinfandel grown in the prestigious St. Helena AVA, and all the grapes coming from dry farmed, certified organic vineyards. Williams finished picking all of the grapes for this wine September 3rd—well before the traumatic events later in the growing season—and it shows in purity and grace of this wine.
Creating a Zin that’s famously restrained compared to brawnier California interpretations, Frog’s Leap’s aims for “a reflection of nature’s own modesty,” as WIlliams put it. Rooting his winemaking in a philosophy that emphasizes letting terroir shine through, Williams avoids over-extraction, relies on native yeast for fermentation, and didn’t use any new oak on this wine, delivering a wine full of bright fruit, lively acidity, and deep, earthy flavors.
The beautiful acidity and moderate levels of alcohol also set this bottle up brilliantly for long cellaring—yet another way this wine adds amazing value to your collection. It’s an absolute Napa classic.
