Terroir Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville the kind of overperforming Cabernet that was once common around Napa Valley but is now almost impossible to find under $50. Showing a decadent, dark-fruited bouquet and focused poise that couldn’t come from anywhere but Napa, you won’t believe how little you paid for this wine—not when most other Oakville Cabernets run at least $100.
The Terroir label is made by Gibbs Family, and while they’re known for the exceptional value they are able to conjure from their St. Helena vineyard, in 2020 they got an opportunity to source fruit from an Oakville site—not far from Rudd and Turnbull’s Fortuna Vineyard—that also supplies $100+ luminaries like B Cellars and Davies.
Because Gibbs’ winery has been in family hands for so long, the winery doesn’t have the kind of capital costs that a newer label would—and they pass the savings onto their customers. For the level of renown attached to this stretch of vineyard, if the source were revealed it could surely sell for multiples more.
Agricultural at heart, the family behind Gibbs remains laser-focused on the grapes and keeps prices reasonable—making this a one-of-a-kind, downright unbelievable deal. We loved the wine’s notes of black cherry compote, cassis, bramble, vanilla, tobacco, and cocoa powder on the nose. The signature Oakville power delivered on the palate with full-bodied richness, rounded tannin and flavors of black raspberry, bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and anise.
