For Magnificent Pinot Noir, Look to Lolol!

Take the windblown maritime climate of the Sonoma Coast, mix in the porous soils of the northern Côte de Nuits, and you’ve got the conditions that make Chile’s Lolol Valley one of the world’s greatest locales for magnificently overperforming Pinot Noir—wines like the 2020 Hacienda Araucano Humo Blanco.

Produced from Demeter-certified biodynamically grown fruit, this stunner earned 93 points from James Suckling, landing it on the critic’s Top 100 Wines of Chile 2021 list. It’s a revelation for those who don’t know that affordable Pinot can still be layered, complex, and completely delicious.

François Lurton, son of the famous Bordeaux winemaker Andre Lurton, has impeccable credentials in France, yet Chile is where he’s made his name.

Lolol Valley faces chilly ocean waters on one side and mountains on the other. The sea infuses the wine with dazzling, saline-tinged notes, while dramatic diurnal temperature swings nurture a superb balance between ripeness and acidity. Lush on the palate yet built on a lean, granitic mineral structure, this is one of the most outstanding, graceful New World Pinots you’ll see all year.

Situated on a foothill, the Hacienda Araucano property has soils with excellent drainage but also the capacity to retain the proper amount of moisture, so the vineyards need only minimal irrigation. In addition, the area’s dry, hot climate all but eliminates the possibility of disease or mildew, making it easier for grapes to be grown without herbicides or pesticides.

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate called the 2020 Hacienda Araucano “quite impressive for the price.” It’s the perfect everyday, friends-drop-by bottle—and if you’re not socking it away by the case, you’re missing out on one of the best bang-for-your-buck Pinots on the globe.
