“The Quality of the Wines Is Undeniable”

The optimists had high hopes. The skeptics thought it might be too good to be true. But both groups had one thing in common: They couldn’t take their eyes off the 2020 Chablis season.

A beautiful spring kicked things off early, with perfect weather for flowering and healthy vines bolting into the summer. By the time July cranked up the heat, growers around the region were bracing for an exceptionally early harvest—but then August showers helped release stress from the vines and extend the grapes’ hang time. In the end, winemakers had the rare luxury of picking at perfect ripeness.

Wine Advocate’s Burgundy ace, William Kelley, raved about the vintage, saying “the quality of the wines is undeniable.” In a normal year, this bottle drinks like a Premier Cru—hence the stellar ratings from Wine Access members—and this is the best version we’ve offered in years.

Over their centuries in Chablis, the Moreau family has accumulated 124 acres of vines, and the 2020 Chablis is a domaine bottling. That means the grapes are harvested and the wine is bottled properly on the estate, and the 2020 showcases the energy of very healthy grapes that are farmed under the philosophy known as la lutte raisonée (“the reasoned struggle”), sharply limiting the use of chemicals.

Louis Moreau ferments their Chablis entirely in stainless steel with native yeasts—as classic as it comes. Ten months of aging in those same tanks allows for the wine to bloom, as malolactic fermentation resolves the wine’s pointillist detail into gloriously harmonious brushstrokes.

Perfect for a roast chicken or platter of peel-and-eat shrimp, it’s mesmerizing stuff from one of the best Chablis vintages in years.
