At Home Among the MICHELIN Stars—and at Your Table
The “cult” category of Napa Valley might be dominated by red wines, but the label making the most waves is Massican.
Massican is the only white-wine-only winery in Napa Valley, and it is a phenomenon. Led by the SF Chronicle’s 2017 Winemaker of the Year Dan Petroski, it’s redefining the category with its crisp and characterful bottlings, which are poured by the glass at The French Laundry, featured at MICHELIN-starred restaurants all over the country, and packed away by the case by locals—including some of Napa Valley’s most formidable winemakers.
The wine is 100% Ribolla Gialla—an ancient Northern Italian grape that hails from Friuli and Slovenia, and serves as one of the pillars of Dan’s flagship Annia bottling—grown on a six-acre vineyard in the cool eastern corner of the Russian River Valley. Grower Chris Bowland planted the site over a decade ago after becoming intrigued with rare Italian varieties—and after having a conversation with Dan. Fast forward 11 years: Every bit of Ribolla Gialla that grows on the site goes to Massican.
Ribolla brings gorgeous texture, lively citrus and nutty notes, and mouthwatering acidity to the party—and you can bet the grape makes the most of its star turn in the Vino Bianco. The wine greets the nose with wonderful citrus and Comice pear aromas, while the palate offers refreshing cut-apple. mineral, and sage accents. With a modest alcohol content of 11.5%, it’s a wine that begs you to enjoy glass after glass, bottle after bottle, with dinner or on its own.
