Historic Winery, Hiding in Plain Sight
Bold. Rich. Layered. Aromatic.
In many parts of the historic Dry Creek Valley, those words describe high-profile Zinfandel and other reds. But in the breezy, sun-drenched vineyards atop Bradford Mountain, Chardonnay takes on all the same traits, and then some.
Michel-Schlumberger has been quietly making the luscious Mountain Ranch bottling there for years—and the 2020 is a generous and well-balanced iteration. It boasts the rich fruit that defines classic California Chardonnay, without being overbearing, plus a creamy texture, apple and peach notes, and a touch of nougat, all gliding on a current of tingling acidity.
Dry Creek Valley is one of California’s most storied regions, home to legendary names and a viticultural history that rivals anything in the Golden State. Jean-Jacques Michel began planting his vineyards here back in 1979, when California wine was just beginning to re-emerge from a decades-long slumber. It was an amazing time to be getting into California wine—prime sites were available for a pittance—and those vineyards are long paid off today.
Michel picked an absolutely perfect place to grow rich, intense Chardonnay. Bradford Mountain is home to the highest altitudes adjacent to Dry Creek Valley, and this estate vineyard sits at the very top. Above the morning fog, these vines enjoy plenty of sunlight, while up-slope afternoon breezes keep them cool, yielding grapes with both concentration and freshness.
In 1991, the Schlumberger family joined Michel, lending their name—and four centuries of winemaking expertise—to the venture. The Schlumbergers are one of the most important winemaking families in the white-wine powerhouse of Alsace, and they recognized the potential of Michel’s groundwork. They’ve elevated the winery to its current excellence and have long been a favorite of ours. But unlike many other Sonoma legends, they’ve remained an insider secret that makes some truly exceptional Dry Creek Chardonnay.
