How This Label Won the Talent Battle
Remember this name: Remington “Remie” Jorgensen.
The young Texan is a supreme winemaking talent with what might be the most brilliant résumé we’ve ever seen for an under-30 winemaker, including stints at Opus One, Domaine de la Côte, Château de Beaucastel, and Alejandro Bulgheroni.
The battle for top talent is always fierce, which is why veteran wine executive David Green and Maayan Koschitzky, director of winemaking at Atelier Melka, snatched Jorgensen up to front their brand-new label. Her first bottling, the 2020 Ride Cabernet, is an astonishing, assured debut that leaves no doubt why her star is rising so fast.
This Cabernet displays a sophistication and confidence that you’d expect from an extremely seasoned Napa hand. It shows an exquisite touch applied to fruit that only vets like Green and Koschitzky can procure: Their deep connections allowed them to tap an NDA-shrouded Howell Mountain vineyard that’s furnished multiple 100-point wines.
Green and Koschitzky have seen a lot of hyped-up winemakers come and go from the Valley scene, but in Jorgensen they recognized someone who possessed not only precocious expertise, but vision.
Other estates and wineries bring on vintners expecting them to conform to a house style. Green and Koschitzky had a better idea: recruit the sharpest young winemaker on the scene, hone her skills and business know-how, and let her passion and intuition lead the project.
“We offered her the chance to play jazz—a little more space and fewer rules,” Green told us.
Jorgensen took that freedom and let it rip. Built with a brick-house structure that will stand up for years in the cellar, the Ride Cabernet is a tour-de-force performance from a winemaker you shouldn’t forget.
