A 100-Point Star in “Grape Heaven”

Let 100-point Tuscan star Carlo Ferrini run wild in an area that Wine Spectator calls “grape heaven” and you have a recipe for a stunning bottle of wine—one that Wine Advocate blessed with a glowing 92-point review.

The 2020 Tenuta Ghiaccio Forte Morellino di Scansano is pure and shining, powerful and long-finishing, with freshness and structure meeting elegant fruit and savory elements. A blend of 85% Sangiovese filled out with Cabernet Sauvignon, it delivers all the bright fruit we love in Chianti, but wraps it in a softer, rounder package.

Morellino di Scansano is an area that might not be on the radar of your average wine collector but has been a magnet for Brunello luminaries. What these Brunello-bred Tuscan aces find in Morellino is a place that Wine Enthusiast called “perfectly suited to grape-growing.” It’s a region that, despite its excellent terroir and winemaking history, hasn’t been dancing in the wine world’s spotlight for centuries like Montalcino or Chianti Classico.

That’s fine with us, because Morellino wines are absolutely worth top dollar. Case in point: this exemplary bottle. Winemaker Carlo Ferrini's team hand-harvests the Sangiovese and Cabernet from sun-kissed hills just miles from the Tyrrhenian Sea, then ferments them in stainless steel, drawing color from the skins over the course of two weeks. After a year of aging, all in stainless steel, the wine is ready for your table—and will pair beautifully with anything from oregano-scented chicken to grilled king salmon.

This bottle shows exactly why Morellino has a reputation for some of the most stellar values in Tuscany.
