There’s More to Tuscany than Sangiovese…
For a long time, red wine was the first thing that came to mind when we thought of Tuscany.
It took just one trip to Maremma to change that.
We began our love affair with Vermentino at a trattoria on the Tuscan coast, where we could smell the sea breeze and the cypress in the air. The cool, crisp Tua Rita Vermentino Perlato del Bosco was served with a plate of herb-laden prosciutto Toscano—and it was utterly perfect.
In 1984, Rita Tua and husband Virgilio Bisti started Tua Rita, buying a small parcel of land and planting it to Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. They later added Vermentino, and in 1992, they released their first edition of Perlato del Bosco.
Tua Rita was way ahead of their time in crafting exquisite Vermentino. Planted in Sardinia, Liguria, and coastal Tuscany, the grape has been exploding in popularity over the past decade. According to Decanter, “Between 2010 and 2015, the period of the last official regional assessment, plantings of Vermentino almost doubled and since then have continued to grow rapidly along the Tuscan coast.”
Want to see what all the fuss is about? Crack open a bottle of Perlato to enjoy with a plate of prosciutto Toscano, herb-strewn focaccia with Ligurian olive oil, and a chunk of pecorino cheese. You’ll instantly be transported to a Tyrrhenian Sea sundown glinting through the cypress trees, with the scent of the ocean surrounding you.
With quality on a par with much more expensive Vermentinos like Podere Grattamacco and Poggio al Tesoro “Solosole Pagus Camilla”, Tua Rita’s Perlato might become your new white-wine obsession.
