California’s Original Pinot Noir Icon
Some wineries can claim to have “started it all.” Others can claim to set the standard today. Williams Selyem is the undisputed Sonoma County icon that can do both.
Williams Selyem awakened the world to the glory of Golden State Pinot Noir. Then, 25 years after their debut, they earned 100 points from Wine Enthusiast, becoming the first North American Pinot to earn a perfect score from a major publication. Year in and year out, they create some of the most sought-after and revered Pinot Noirs made in the United States.
Williams Selyem has a nose for (and access to) some of the Russian River AVA’s top sites, and this bottling is always a gorgeous snapshot. The 2020 is a blend of Pinot from mature vines at Williams Selyem’s Lewis MacGregor Estate Vineyard, a 30-acre site they purchased in 2014, and two sites in the area’s Laguna de Santa Rosa watershed: the Martaella Vineyard, whose high-density plantings and volcanic and marine-sedimentary soils produce small yields of intense fruit, and the organically farmed Laguna Vineyard, which sits on Russian River’s trademark Goldridge soils in Sebastopol.
It’s no secret that the fires of 2020 brought massive challenges to Northern California. The grapes that went into this Pinot thrived in 2020’s sunny spring and steady, warm summer, then were harvested ahead of an August heat spike—and ahead of the Walbridge fire, which broke out on August 17.
This is a beautiful bottle of Russian River Pinot, from the icon that made the world aware of what was possible in Sonoma County. California Pinot does not get any better.
