Just One Lottery Win Away

Margaret River is basically Australia’s Napa Valley by the sea: a quaint tourist town located in a winemaker’s and wine lover’s paradise on par with the best of the New World. Located on the sparkling, warm Indian Ocean, the area beckons sunbathers and surfers alike. One winemaker we spoke to told us his personal record for leaving work, driving to the beach for a quick surf session, and getting back to the winery was just 35 minutes.

That proximity to the sea does more than make Margaret River the ultimate location for surfer-winemakers. The nearby Indian Ocean cools grapes that bathe in copious amounts of sunshine all season long, which makes this a perfect place for viticulture. Even Robert Mondavi was so convinced of the area’s potential that he flirted with buying property there in the early 1970s.

Wills Domain comprises 20 hectares of rolling hills in the Gunyulgup Valley, about half an hour north of the town of Margaret River. The first vines were planted back in 1992—but the family that owns the winery boasts a history in the business that goes back much further than that: The Haunold family was first appointed as royal wine merchants in Europe back in the 1380s (not a typo). They purchased Wills Domain in 2000.

Named after a piece of Haunold family folklore, the Mystic Spring Cabernet spent nine months in French oak barrels, and is now ready to become your new house pour. Fantastic on its own, great by a warm fire, and begging to be paired with braised portobellos or ribs off the grill, it’s the kind of Cabernet you want to stack high and chip away at all year.
