A Modern-Day Classic from One of the World’s Oldest Wineries
When our Master Sommelier, Sur Lucero, was working at Napa Valley’s bustling Oenotri, he could barely keep the Abbazia di Novacella Pinot Grigio in stock!
You’ll hear the same thing from sommeliers from the Bay Area to Milan: This crystalline, stiletto-sharp, mouthwatering Pinot Grigio disappears fast because it’s by-the-glass GOLD.
“The combination of price point versus quality is outstanding,” raved Vinous in a write-up about the Abbazia di Novacella winery, while Wine Advocate hailed the “terrific value” offered by the estate. That stunning quality-to-price ratio comes through in every sip of this 2021, which just might be the ultimate crowd-pleaser Pinot Grigio.
Fashioned at a storybook winery nestled in an amphitheater of vines, this clean, thirst-slaking gem is the fruition of an 880-year tradition: Founded in 1142, Abbazia di Novacella is Italy’s second-oldest winery.
For this Pinot Grigio, Gambero Rosso Winemaker of the Year Celesto Lucin lets the mountainous terroir speak for itself. Grown on the south side of the Alps at elevations of up to 2000 feet, the vines have to squeeze their way through nutrient-poor soils, forcing them to operate as efficiently as possible.
Maturation is aided by mornings that heat up quickly under the sun’s gaze, and by a long, rhythmic growing season that can stretch into autumn. Cool nights preserve fresh acidity, and this side of the valley tends to invest the wine with a pronounced saline edge.
Most of the Pinot Grigio is fermented and stored in stainless-steel tanks to capture the grape’s natural fruitiness, with 25% kept back in large oak casks with native yeasts to supply a little extra depth and body.
This is easily a contender for your new favorite Pinot Grigio.
