A Vanguard Producer…Making Classics

Duncan Arnot and Nathan Roberts were practically revolutionaries when they launched their eponymous winery in 2001. They were the vanguard of the “New California,” making throwback wines whose structure, freshness, and purity recalled the great Cali wines of the 70s and 80s, and the Burgundy and Bordeaux that inspired those.

Now, with their wines on too many MICHELIN-starred wine lists to count, Arnot-Roberts has produced perhaps their greatest vintage. Vinous founder Antonio Galloni called their 2021s “simply magnificent from top to bottom,” and the collection is highlighted by their new Cabernet-based Red Wine, which earned 95+ points from Galloni: “I loved it,” he declared, calling it “a special bottling that hopefully will become part of the permanent lineup.”

We’ve known Duncan and Nathan for a long time, so we were able to secure a handful of cases of this complex, ageworthy gem, which reminds us of a young 1970s bottling from Stags Leap sent through a time machine. We love it for its unabashed old-school approach. Arnot-Roberts is unafraid of following in the footsteps of Dunn and Togni, and this wine has serious power that demands bottle age—or a long decant—and will reward patience in spades.

It’s made from 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the rest of the blend split evenly between Cabernet Franc and Merlot, all from organically farmed vineyards. was captivated by the beautiful aromatics of dark berries, baked plums, and hints of tobacco and violets—classic Mayacamas Cabernet comes to mind—and the palate has classic juniper and sage accents to the red and black fruit.

This is a classic, perfect for holding and watching evolve over the next decade-plus.
