“Some of the Most Impressive Wines I’ve Tried Anywhere—Not Just in the US.”
Dollar for dollar, NOBODY is making better Pinot Noir in the world right now than Oregon. And there might be no bottle in the world more impressive for the price than Jim Maresh’s 2021 Old Vine Pinot Noir.
Made from 51-year old vines, grown in the spectacular 2021 vintage, this bottle earned a staggering 98 points from the tough-scoring Wine Advocate. That topped nearly every 2021 from Williams Selyem or Littorai, and even Burgundy Grands Crus like the 2021 Mugnier Musigny ($2,000+) and 2021 Rousseau Chambertin Clos de Bèze ($4,500+)!
The Maresh’s big red barn on Worden Hill Road is impossible to miss. Back in 1969, farmer Jim Maresh Sr. imported Pommard and Wadenswil Pinot Noir clones from California. He planted them the next spring with the help of his neighbor Dick Erath, and those deep-rooted, dry-farmed vines produce world-class fruit today. This bottle is the proof. In fact, our Oregon-winemaker friend, when we told him we were offering this wine, said: “You can tell people that if they don’t like that wine, they don’t like Pinot Noir.”
Erin Brooks wrote in Wine Advocate, “The wines are concentrated yet elegant, fruity yet flinty and are some of the most impressive wines I’ve tried anywhere—not just in the US.”
With its dry conditions and low yields, 2021 is a landmark year for Willamette Valley wines, with one veteran winemaker saying, “It will certainly rank as one of our top five vintages. It’s certainly a great vintage in the making and I don’t say that lightly.”
This is a formidable Pinot that will deliver well over a decade of thrilling drinking—that is, if you can maintain a little patience.
