A Grand Tour of Washington’s Best Sites

Robert Parker has called DeLille Cellars “the Lafite-Rothschild of Washington State,” and their 2021 D2 Red Wine is built to thrill.

A Bordeaux-style blend that shows the structure, savoriness, and intricacy of the Médoc greats, this wine comes from an absolute Murderer’s Row of sources: Red Willow, Harrison Hill, Ciel du Cheval, Klipsun, Boushey, DuBrul, Upchurch, and Grand Ciel. These are the best vineyards in Washington State, and they’re all represented in this blend.

When he first crafted D2 30 years ago, DeLille’s head winemaker, Chris Upchurch, forged the trail for Bordeaux-style blends in Washington state. He’s spent the last quarter-century perfecting his art, even whipping up a blend on the morning of his own wedding, leaving him with wine-stained hands at his nuptials. That combination of relentless dedication and all-star sites makes this wine truly exceptional.

Composed of 58% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot, the wine offers a delicious trek through the Columbia Valley’s most acclaimed Washington appellations. Upchurch maximizes his grapes’ potential and elicits further complexity by aging the wine for 18 months in 55% new French oak.

We put some of this in our cellars every single year—for the price, it’s hard to find a Bordeaux blend in Napa, Washington, or France that offers this sort of quality and vineyard pedigree for the price. We encourage you to enjoy this vintage over the next 15 years along with us.
