Three Generations, One Vineyard

Some of California's best wines never make it to a store shelf. Hafner Vineyard is one of them—an Alexander Valley family estate that has sold its wine directly, to its patrons and a short list of leading restaurants, since 1967.

Alexander Valley is Sonoma's warm heart, where long, sun-filled days and cool nights ripen fruit fully while holding its acidity in check. It's Cabernet country first, but that same climate gives Chardonnay a richness and depth the cooler coastal sites can't reach.

The 2021 vintage handed Sonoma one of its best growing seasons in years—even, warm days and cool nights that packed the fruit with flavor while keeping it fresh. The Reserve shows it: a golden, full-bodied Chardonnay layered with tropical and orchard fruit, baking spice, and a long, generous finish.

It's made the way Hafner makes everything—unhurried. The Reserve ferments and rests in French oak, then settles into the estate's underground caves, where steady cool and high humidity do the slow work these wines are built for.

The estate began as a prune ranch. Dick and Mary Hafner bought 250 acres north of Healdsburg in 1967, planted with pears, prunes, and an old block of Zinfandel—grapes have grown on this ground since the 1880s. They planted Cabernet and Chardonnay, took their first harvest in 1971, and made their first wine in 1982.

Three generations on, the family still farms every acre themselves. Parke Hafner has made every vintage since 1982—four decades and counting. He trained at UC Davis, spent two years at Chappellet under Tony Soter, and worked a harvest at Domaine des Comtes Lafon in Meursault, a benchmark address for white Burgundy.

They farm with the long view. More than half of the 250 acres is left as oak woodland for the wildlife that shares it, and the estate is certified sustainable, runs entirely on renewable energy, and hasn't used an herbicide in three decades.

Hafner's wines have long held their place at California's finest restaurants, from Mélisse to Providence to SingleThread—the quiet kind of recognition earned one vintage at a time.
