From Two Top Sub-AVAs

We reserve the Off the Cuff label for lightning-strike deals—the kind that materialize when  deep connections, right-place-right-time fortune, and the decisiveness of an F1 driver all come together.

These wines represent some of the biggest bargains we get—and we scored an absolute whopper in the 2021 Off the Cuff Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley.

This wine hails from an absolutely spectacular vintage—it’s 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grown on meticulously farmed, certified-organic vineyards in two of Napa Valley’s pricier appellations. We’re staying extra hush-hush about this wine because it comes from a high-end Napa  winery, stationed just south of Stags Leap District, that has become a member-favorite over the past few years.

If the winery had held onto these barrels, bottled and labeled them as their normal single-vineyard releases, they’d surely get plucked up by their rabid mailing list and the select restaurants that carry the brand. We think if you take in this Cabernet, from the aromas of red currants, ripe cherries, cracked graphite, cedar chest, baking spices, and toasted vanilla to the stout structure built on smooth, ripe tannins and juicy acidity—it’s tough to tell it from the winery’s “name-brand” sell-outs.

The main site, just south of Stags Leap, is perfectly situated where the strong marine influence and fog from San Pablo Bay can still be felt strongly. The result is a long growing season that is crucial for world-class Cabernet. The other site is closer to the town of Napa, where the presence of the San Pablo Bay is even stronger, and it keeps the temperatures a good ten degrees cooler than in the rest of the Valley. Another long growing season, another world-class batch of grapes, one spectacular Cabernet.
