    A Benchmark Producer of Temecula

Ask any sommelier. Ask the San Francisco Chronicle: As one of California’s fastest-growing wine categories, it’s getting harder and harder to keep up with demand for great Sauvignon Blanc.

Prices are steadily climbing for this crisp, citrusy, classic variety from Bordeaux. That’s why South Coast Winery’s Musqué Clone Sauvignon Blanc is such a great find and rare treat: It’s a wonderfully rich, tropical—but still brisk—Sauvignon Blanc that had us licking our lips from the first sip.

But wait—did we really “discover” this Southern California winery that has taken home Winery of the Year honors FIVE times at the California State Fair? Founded by Jim Carter in the mid-1990s, today the winery is also a thriving resort and spa boasting some of the most acclaimed wines in the underrated wine region of Temecula, about an hour north of San Diego. It’s an up-and-coming AVA, and South Coast is one of its benchmark producers.

Part of the magic of this expressive Sauvignon Blanc is the winery’s deft deployment of the “musqué” clone, known as clone FPS 27, brought to California from Bordeaux in 1962. Today it accounts for only 2% or less of all Sauvignon Blanc acreage, but it’s prized for its exotic, tropical, floral aromas.

Our tasting panel was impressed by this wine’s bounty of tropical fruit and grapefruit zest, along with white flowers, fresh cream, and spice. On the palate, you’ll find notes of pineapple juice, lemon meringue, vanilla soda, blanched almonds, and underripe apricots, balanced perfectly with zesty fruit, a creamy texture, and a bright finish. A great white-wine “discovery!”
