A Stunning Barossa Coup

Two Hands proprietor Michael Twelftree acquired this red-earthed, east-facing vineyard near Greenock in 2001—a year after the winery’s debut vintage.

A construction business owner, Twelftree began Two Hands with his original business partner Richard Mintz based on a simple question. While at a party drinking a bottle of Australian Shiraz, Michael thought: This wine is what the world wants. How are we going to give it to them?

His first year, starting out with an initial investment of $30,000, he made just 800 cases of a single Shiraz. Now heading up “one of Australia’s most compelling wineries” (Wine Spectator), Michael has poured everything he’s learned about wine and vineyard management from the negociant side of his business into the care of this estate vineyard.

A crown jewel of Two Hands’ holdings, the Coach House vineyard produces a seemingly impossible mix of suppleness and magnificence—a wine so big it seems to burst from whatever interpretative frame one attempts to apply to it. There is the trademark broad structure of a Barossa Valley Shiraz, and the fine sheen of 18 months in French oak, 20% new—a richness that Two Hands has never shied from.

But give a long decant, even a double-decant, and an epic array of aromas and flavors come to the fore in the glass. There’s a distinct Rhône-like depth—the savory black pepper, licorice, and game meat notes—rounded out by huge waves of dense fruit, ranging from black cherry to juicy crushed blackberries.

It’s a wine that will still be revealing new dimensions long after the dinner plates are put away—or after a ten-year spell in the cellar. Grab it while it’s here and available at this incredible price.
