The Napa Cab Almost No One Knows
For more than two decades, Ryan Waugh has taken a hands-on approach to Napa Valley winemaking, farming vineyards himself and overseeing every step from vine to bottle. His focus has always been on site expression and balance, with fruit sourced from a range of carefully managed vineyards across the Valley.
Waugh’s path into wine began in the late 1990s, working alongside respected producers in both California and abroad. Over time, he developed a philosophy rooted in precision farming and restrained cellar work, with the goal of allowing vineyard character to come through clearly in the finished wines.
Rather than relying on a single estate, Waugh works with multiple vineyard sites, selecting fruit based on quality and expression. Farming decisions are made block by block, with an emphasis on achieving ripeness while maintaining structure and freshness.
The 2021 vintage in Napa Valley was defined by drought conditions that led to smaller berries and lower yields. The result was fruit with exceptional concentration—deep color, firm tannins, and pronounced flavor intensity. Many have pointed to the vintage as one of the strongest in recent years for Cabernet Sauvignon.
In the cellar, Waugh’s approach is measured and deliberate. Fermentations are handled to preserve both aromatic detail and structure, with aging designed to support the wine without overshadowing the fruit.
The resulting Cabernet Sauvignon reflects both the vintage and the winemaking philosophy behind it. Aromatically, it shows lifted floral notes alongside layers of dark fruit. On the palate, it balances richness with structure, delivering depth without excess weight.
