“Words Simply Cannot Do Them Justice”
At first, Raúl Pérez Pereira was Don Quixote, trying to prove that the wines of his native Bierzo belonged in the same conversation—at the same prices—as the great Burgundies. Now he’s an internationally celebrated superstar whose bottles are on Michelin-starred wine lists across the world.
Pereira’s name has become synonymous with the cutting edge of Spanish viticulture. In 1994, at just 22, he crafted his first vintage for his family's winery. In 2005, he took a giant leap of faith, leaving the comfort of his family's establishment to forge his own path. The result is Bodegas y Viñedos Raúl Pérez, which has become a benchmark for the Bierzo appellation and a beacon for wine enthusiasts worldwide.
The Raúl Pérez Ultreia La Vitoriana, from vines planted over 120 years ago, is a tribute to Bierzo’s potential. Bierzo is “a beautiful region halfway between Castilla and Galicia that started a new life with the turn of the century and hasn’t stopped since,” according to the Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutiérrez.
Bounded by mountains, the main vineyards of Bierzo form a south-facing horseshoe shape. The higher elevations and cooler temperatures help give the Mencía grape—which can be as fickle as Pinot Noir—its light, sprightly acidity and intense, earthy, red-fruit palate. While Bierzo is famous for its well-draining slate soils, the layers of clay beneath are just as essential to this wine’s character, absorbing moisture and mitigating the need for irrigation.
La Vitoriana is from a cool site that thrived in the warmth of the 2022 vintage, producing a thrilling dialectic between ripe fruit and a spice-and-herb freshness. Pérez uses whole-cluster fermentation and native yeasts to build complexity and ensure that the wine has vibrancy and a beautiful drinkability.
