“Bravo!” to Giscours
In naming it their Wine of the Year, Wine Spectator heaped plenty of praise on the 2022 Château Giscours. “If you needed a reminder that Bordeaux still makes some of the greatest wines in the world,” wrote Senior Editor James Molesworth, “the Château Giscours Margaux 2022 is your wine.”
Not to be outdone, James Suckling decorated it with 98 points, putting it neck and neck with icons Château Margaux and Château Palmer. This is a bottle that deserves all the accolades. It’s gorgeous now with a long decant but definitely built to age, a true must-have for the cellar—and a miracle at its price.
Drive north on the famous D2 Route de Médoc and as you cross into Margaux, Giscours’ sprawling property is the first Classified Growth you’ll see. Behind acres of manicured parks and gardens lie gently undulating vineyards marked by the Left Bank’s famous gravel soils, with three hilltops that allow for ideal water drainage. It’s a prime terroir, no doubt about it.
This flagship Haut-Médoc Third Growth, founded in 1552, has been owned by the Dutch entrepreneur Eric Albada-Jelgersma since 1995. Over the course of the past two and a half decades, new vines have been planted to complement the more venerable plantings, hand-harvesting has been re-introduced, the cellars have been renovated, investment made in new barrels, and there’s been a gradual move towards organic production.
The estate’s fine fettle is reflected in this wine, which hails from a warm vintage. A blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 3% each Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, it’s a gorgeously ripe yet fresh wine, showing beautiful aromatics and a plush mouthfeel. It’s a seductive wine of serious sophistication, and it will evolve beautifully.
