In the modern era, Daniel Chotard has been quietly making Sancerre with an old-school sense of place, and in 2011 he passed the torch to his son Simon, who has elevated the family’s wines to new heights.

Displaying a richness and a sense of dimension that speaks to the rigor of the Chotards’ farming and their attention to detail in the cellar, the 2022 is a standout. High-density vine plantings, hand-harvesting and -sorting, and extended time on lees—these are the practices that were once central to Sancerre, but are rare to find today, making Chotard a delicious value from an internationally renowned appellation. 

In 2022, the Chotards were blessed with a modern-day classic vintage. After several years of enduring seemingly everything that mother nature could throw at them—frost, rain, you name it—the sun shone on Sancerre in 2022. The result is this wine, which shows off beautifully seductive fruit to go with its trademark minerality.

Suffice it to say that whether you’re in Paris, New York, or Cincinnati, Chotard’s wines are much easier to find at top bistros than on store shelves. It’s a good reason to keep this superstar white wine in your cellar at all times.
