The Pinnacle of Côte-Rôtie

For over a decade, Silicon Valley’s Michelin-starred Village Pub has won Wine Spectator’s Grand Award for the Infinite Jest–sized doorstop they call a wine list. And while we delight in perusing impressive wine lists over Champagne, we requested a little help on our last visit.

Luckily, the somm was even better than the selection. After sharing our dinner choices with him, we quickly found common ground in the Northern Rhône—which whittled our choices down to four tightly packed pages. With little hesitation, he guided us to the 2022 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie. And with the first sip, we were blown away.

Jamet is a—some would say the—reference point for Côte-Rôtie, and this wine unleashes an intoxicating array of aromas, with dark cherries, blackberries, and plums mingling with notes of purple flowers, cracked pepper, and bacon. There's a subtle hint of graphite and earth, adding depth. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and smooth, with ripe tannins providing structure while seamlessly integrating with the fruit flavors and a long and savory finish. It’s Northern Rhône perfection.

Domaine Jamet is run by Jean-Paul Jamet, a traditionalist who works his dauntingly steep and rocky vineyards by hand. In the cellar, he sticks with classic Côte-Rôtie methods, fermenting with whole cluster and aging his wines in demi-muids rather than more fashionable small oak vessels. Jean-Paul has also resisted the urge to bottle extremely small and expensive single-site Côte-Rôties, choosing to make a La Landonne, a Côte Brune, and this one.

Grown on 95% schist soils and 5% granite (on vines aged five to 85 years), this is as good as the Northern Rhône gets. We’re extremely proud to share it with you.
